movies

i watch movies. most of us watch movies. do you ever feel like you just wasted 2 hours of your life watching a stupid movie? what if the film was jocked by a bunch of artsy fartsy film critics? then when the movie sucks, especially, i feel like i've been had. i only want a few things out of most movies i watch: mindless violence, mindless hilarity, and for the good guy to win at the end. please keep reading for my sentiments on a few movies i've viewed recently.

'no country for old men' started out so great - people were dying, it was awesome. then it ends. i mean, abruptly ends. the good guy dies, the good guy's wife dies, and the killer walks away (sorry if i spoiled it for you). maybe i didn't get it. but more likely, it was probably just stupid. my guess is that the writer spent most of his/her creative juice on the plot, and was drained dry by the time it came for the end. i was bummed to see a movie that was so good, get ruined by a lame ending. but hey, at least there were a bunch of sweet death scenes.

we watched 'babel' the other night. i didn't find this one as bad as the other one, just kind of lame. throughout the course of the movie, we see how a bunch of people's lives are affected by other people through both direct and indirect actions. it was kind of clever, but if you think about the characters from the start of the movie, and then look at them at the end of the movie...not a lot has changed. yeah, the mexican maid is deported, but she was in the US illegally. yeah, the wife got blasted, but she lived and she's back to her upper crust life of luxury. yeah, the dad sold a rifle that was used in the shooting, but that's not what he meant for the rifle to be used for. after the movie ended, i felt the need to reflect: i just watched a movie where some grouchy broad gets shot, and some dad stands on his balcony next to his naked teenage daughter. i'm over it.

maybe i'm an idiot, but by the time i die, i'm going to write my own movie; and it'll probably go something like this: the hero prospers due to hard work and having great values. things are going great until a bunch of bad guys/aliens/monsters/whatever appear in town and kill a bunch of people (in a bloody/horrific way), but the hero avenges them by destroying the villains. life goes on, and everybody is happy. the end.
